Weekly Round-up: 26 Jan 2025

All the latest news, events, and results from NFCC Members from this week’s two-wheeled adventures…

Gravel n Grog

Gravel and grog, the club ride which was introduced to fill the yawning gap after the TT season and the autumn has become the ride that won’t die, somehow struggling its way into its sixth month. Despite the cold, dark and occasionally wet conditions, folk keep turning up. What it could be that attracts so many on freezing nights to sample the produce available at the Vibrant tap is hard to quantify but to paraphrase from Jeff Wayne’s, War of the Worlds musical ‘Still they come, for booze’. This week’s ride featured no punctures, crashes or bar fights, and despite the opposing views on the sporting merits of darts, everyone appeared to have a good evening. Can Gravel and Grog make it into the spring? Can the ever-empty Vibrant Tap? No one knows, that’s part of the fun.

Saturday Club Ride

Club Ride 25th January
A very cold morning was just above the threshold where there was a risk of ice on the roads so we were all go for another Saturday ride.
The planned route was 103Km and within the forest. About sixteen riders braved the elements so it was a two-group ride as usual. There were some notable absentees from the Saturday regulars who thought it wise to seek warmer climes for winter training. Phill B is in New Zealand, Phil H in Thailand, and Graham in the Canaries from where Ben G has just returned, Phil G thought he’d follow suit so is camping in Wales. Hardcore or barking mad, make your own choice.

The Club’s zealous mudguard enforcer arrived at the start on his summer bike sans mudguards. He meekly tried to explain this diabolical deed was due to replacing tyres and tubes on his winter bike yesterday and waking up to find a flat tyre. His comrades were not appreciative of this double standard so it was unanimous that Barry is in the barrel this week.
We duly headed north with plans to pick up other riders en route who were more wedded to their duvets than early starts. Both groups went to plan and met up at Steff’s for coffee. Here we found the café was completely full of cyclists. Hopefully, they will see sense soon and change into a bike shop and not a garden centre! The cafe coped admirably with the massive influx of cyclists and we were served efficiently with excellent fare as usual.
After gratefully warming our hands on our hot drinks we headed west for a loop around Burley and started to shed riders who were close to home. No incidents to report. Kudos to all that turned out on a challenging day but were rewarded with some pleasant winter sun and the usual club ride bonhomie.
But unfortunately, I do need to end the ride report on a sour note. Late in the day we finally saw Axum’s ride on Strava. He had extended the club ride from 103Km to over 225Km. There will be an inquiry to find out who removed his Garmin after he set it for directions home and replaced it upside down. Whoever is responsible for this treachery, it’s not big and it’s not clever!

Pringle Homes Summer Series: Rd. 1: Leeston Handicap

Phill Brown is in the middle of his winter migration and finds himself in the thick of summer on the opposite side of the planet – didn’t worry, you don’t need to hate him individually, he already knows we collectively do! The Pringle Homes Summer Series kicked off this week on the quiet rounds on the outskirts of Christchurch, NZ. with the first event a 69km handicapped road race. With Brown thrown in right at the deep end, the fast and flat four-lap course was completed in just 1hr 24mins at an average of 42km/h! With all the groups in the 50+ rider race coming together on the last lap, Phill hung in the bunch to take 10th place after a big final effort on a draggy 1.5km straight to the finish line.

Wessex CX League Rd 12: Crow

The “home” race for New Forest Cycling Club at the traditional Crow venue near Ringwood. A huge thanks to all Club Members who came out, volunteered and supported the event along with a big well done to all those who have taken part not only at this event but throughout the season.
