Saturday Club Ride

Thirteen riders turned up for the start of this week’s club ride which was a trip north to the Wallops. Planned route was 124km with over 100m of climbing. One of the riders who assembled felt challenged by the barrel being sorted two weeks ago within a number of minutes from the start and last week within just seconds. Deciding to go one better Graham, who was making his return after six ascents (and descents) of Mont Ventoux turned up on the bike that was used for those heroics with no hydraulic pressure in the front brake and decided (before it was decided for him) that this latest display of mechanical incompetence earned him a week in the barrel, a trip to the local bike shop and an early bath.

With no appetite to form a fast group it was a single peloton that headed east towards Beaulieu. It was Simply Italian day at Beaulieu, so we were passed (very courteously) by lots of exotic and rare machinery. We headed out of the forest through Hillstreet and north to the army Museum of Flying for coffee. Just as we arrived a light shower arrived and just as we left it stopped. I would like to point out the meticulous planning that goes into these rides to ensure that the rain comes at the precise moment we find shelter, but modesty forbids!
The ride back to the forest took in some roads we haven’t used before and thankfully no roads that were gravel tracks with grass growing in the middle and nettles blocking off the rideable bits of tarmac that Barry has picked recently. We started to shed riders as we got close to home as usual. No other acts of incompetence, ineptitude, indecency to report this week despite a number of serial offenders being out. Thanks as ever to all for the company, turns at the front and general bonhomie.

Swindon Road Club and Swindon Wheelers 50-mile time trial

NFCC’s Gary Lock was reported in action at the combined Swindon Road Club and Swindon Wheelers 50-mile time trial. This 50-mile event, run on course U86/50, is a 2.5 lap circuit with riders completing two big laps and a slight diversion to follow the route back to the finish just south of the start. Gary clocked an impressive 2h06m02s for 9th overall on the day.

BJW 10-mile time trial

NFCC’s Sein vdP topped the timesheet again at the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 10-mile time trial on the local rumble strip aka P311. Bev Hards (NFCC) took second place on the timesheet, covering the 10 mile course in 27m14s, with Sien clocking in at 26m00s. Barry Hards was also in action, clocking in at 24m32s, with Bob Jolliffe at 35m57s.

Extracurricular activities: Ventoux Cingles

A week or two ago, a pair of intrepid NFCC members packed their bikes and headed to the content to ride the esteemed Giant of Provence, Mont Ventoux, not once, but thrice.
