Weekly Round-up: 29 Sep 2024

All the latest news, events, and results from NFCC Members from this week’s two-wheeled adventures…

Saturday Club Ride

A bright sunny day but a pretty cold one for this weeks club ride. The planned route was 126Km around them forest. Firstly, to the east around East End and Lepe, then west to Moyles Court before a southerly loop back to Brock. A dozen or so made the start this week including Matt K, who in an attempt to avoid the barrel for a third consecutive week with Di2 fails had turned up on his new gravel bike instead. He needn’t have worried as the barrel was sorted before the ride had even started.

Last week Barry broke a pedal. Fair enough that can happen to anybody. He duly replaced it from a spare from his shed midweek week. He didn’t bother testing it and when setting out for the start found out the replacement pedal was broken too. So, it was a swift return home, another pedal change and a missed start. He met the group on the climb to Roundhills only to find out his rear tyre was going soft for it was a return home for a bike change this time. The hapless ride leader managed to finally rejoin the group near Lepe… They were amazed to see he was able to find his way out of the barrel to even make it that far!
By this point, the group had lost Phill B, Jay T and Matt K who all sloped off for cake had other duties to attend to or had been voted out be the rest of the peloton I’m not sure. The ride progressed to the coffee stop at Minstead. Luckily, the shop provided some shelter and a bit of a sun trap so taking refreshments outside was just about OK on a cold day. As the group set off to leave, Barry found out the rear tyre on his replacement bike was also going soft so decided it wasn’t his day and took the short cut home. The ride continued as planned. Kudos to Phil H and Graham for rounding up to yet another century ride. Double kudos to Phil H for being the first to fit mudguards for the winter. Time for everyone to start planning for that change next month.

Sunday Club Ride

It’s that time of year when no one quite knows what to wear or which bike to bring. On the one hand some were wrapped up for winter whilst others turned up in shorts and jerseys. Aero bikes and winter steeds attended in equal numbers. No one was wrong, it was both wintery and mild, blustery and calm. 11 made the start and with no one appearing enthusiastic about smashing it around the route, so we set off in one easy/steady paced group. After a long ride on Saturday, Graham claimed to be unenthusiastic about the prospect of yet another bike ride, no one makes him do it but like one of those monkeys with the miniature cymbals he just keeps moving. As it turned out Graham fell victim to the puncture gods on Col de Bolderwood.

Though quickly fixed, with his highly recommended (by him) Dynaplug, it seemed to sap what enthusiasm he had for the day and possibly life and he couldn’t resist the temptation to turn into his drive as we passed his home. Despite the general agreement that we would ride at the slower group pace there was a point in the ride when some riders decided to ‘help’ our erstwhile group ride leader by taking to the front. This is normally a sign that the pace is irritatingly pedestrian and more importantly that the group is at risk of missing the 11.00 o.clock cut off time for Breakfast at the Daisy tea rooms. After some hard graft by the hungriest riders we did just arrive in time for some to gorge themselves on pig-based bap banquets so all was well( if you discount poor Peppa’s viewpoint). Fun ride as usual in good company.

Three Peaks CX Challenge

This year our very own racing secretary Joe Shepherd was returning for a second attempt at this great race following his debut in 2023. Excuses were the order of the day and after a week leading up to the race marred by illness Joe arrived in Yorkshire apprehensive as to what state his energy reserves were in.
