“MY best ride of the season,” is the way 2011 British Best All-Rounder Jeff Jones described his win in New Forest CC’s Rudy Project time trial on August Bank Holiday Monday.
Jones of the Drag2Zero Team took top honours with a time of 56min 24sec for three 8.9-mile laps of New Forest’s Bull Hill-Portmore-South Baddesley-East Boldre circuit, which proved a hit with competitors, despite the ponies, cattle and donkeys encountered en route.
His teammate, multi-champ Julia Shaw of Bramshaw, won the two-lap women’s event in 40-44, a time that would have earned her fourth in the veteran’s race won by Mid Devon Road Club’s Andrew Perkins in 39-15.
Second senior was Scott Walker of MG Décor with 59-32 and third went to Dean Robson of Somerset RC, a further seven seconds behind.
Second claim New Forest CC member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) was seventh with 1-04-05, one place ahead of Stewart Ward (1-08-40) who led the point-winning New Forest CC team backed by James Bannister (ninth with 1-08-59) and Donna Shaw, third woman rider with 52-59.
London Dynamo’s Rebecca Slack was second woman with 43-47.
The award for 18 to 23-year-old espoirs went to VC St Raphael’s Jack Green with 1-03-04 for three laps. New Forest CC chairman Margaret Read’s grandson Matthew Golden (Farnham RC) was second espoir with 1-15-46.
New Forest’s Chris Grant was 10th-placed senior with 1-10-01.
Second and third places in the veterans’ scratch race went to Steve Smales (Boneshakers-Trek) and Steve Berry (Team Swift) with 40-03 and 40-31 respectively.
New Forest veterans Stuart Peckham and Martin Balk clocked good times of 45-33 and 58-38.
Other central southern veterans involved were: Dave Dent (Wightlink Offshore RT) fourth with 40-58), Gary Dighton (Poole Whlrs, fifth, 41-01), Terry Icke (Poole Whlrs, sixth and best target time with 41-02), Stuart Martingale (Sotonia CC, 15th, 42-38), Ray Claridge (GA Cycles, 16th, 42-46), Stuart Grace (GA Cycles, 21, 45-54), Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael, 23rd, 46-28), Terry Belbin (Poole Whlrs, 47-35).
Double silver at TSUK Games
New Forest CC’s Bob Jolliffe won two silver medals in the Transplant Sport UK’s annual games held in Medway, Kent.
Riding in the 50 to 59-year-olds’ time trial around two testing laps of the purpose-built 2.9km Cyclopark circuit at Gravesend he clocked 9-47 behind gold medallist John Leveson’s 9-31.
In the floodlit road race that followed, Jolliffe was beaten in the chase group sprint, which earned him second place in the 50 to 59 group, behind Gerald Brown.
“It was a fantastic way to celebrate my kidney transplant three years ago,” he said.
After disappointment due to the cancellation of the TT last week, this week Aron Kelly managed the win he’s been training for. After giving up triathlon to focus on the bike, he’s hoping to have more success this year. His partner Sonia Laurie was also fastest female, with a strong field of 5 NFCC female […]
Forget the hype of Wout Van Aert, the absence of Mathieu Van der Poel, the strength of Phillipe Gilbert and the bad form of Peter Sagan. From an idea 8 months ago, NFCC member Matt Cafferky (and Bill Mayes) tackled the event. Over to Matt in a fantastic report … here
